Clips Shows Suck
You've probably had this experience — you tune in to a show you like, wondering what will be new this week, only to find out that it's recycled material.
Boo.
I don't know anyone who enjoys these clips shows. They make sense for practical reasons — maybe some of the performers have other obligations, or they're taking a break, and something has to fill that time slot. But for the audience, it's pretty lame.
Variety and newness are why people watch these shows, not to see repeats of past performances. I'd wager that most people would rather have a few poor episodes sprinkled in if it meant they were at least getting variety, rather than boring repetition.
But we don't want such variety everywhere in life. Sometimes, we like to know what we're getting. Food is often one of these cases, unless we're purposefully trying something new. Nobody wants to find surprises in a bag of flour, or to bite into an apple and find a worm. To order one dish but receive another is generally considered an annoyance.
If you think you're having a vanilla jelly bean, but it turns out to be coconut, it might taste gross to you, if only because it's unexpected.
What makes food different from talk shows, in this regard? We seem to like variety when we're looking for it (such as in entertainment), but dislike it when we are not (such as in a bowl of rice, or a piece of candy).
Frequency plays a part here, too. Eating is often a routine, and we don't want surprises in routines. We seek thrills and entertainment as an exception to the norm.
With clips shows, we are expecting the unknown but receive the opposite, and are disappointed. With food, we expect to know what we're getting, and are upset when we receive otherwise. Both are cases of reality not matching your expectations.
Therefore, expect the unexpected, and you will never be disappointed. After all, every grain of rice is different. Consistency is an illusion.
