Diversity Is Strength (part 1)

"Did you hear they're not growing bananas any longer?"
"Why not?"
"They're long enough already!"
It only very vaguely looks like a banana.

ha. haaa.

Seriously though, the world's banana crops are dieing out. A monoculture is inherently weak.

People use the word "mutant" as if it were a bad thing. But mutation is the fuel of evolution, and evolution is the engine of progress. Without mutation, we do not progress. The rest of the world advances without us, and we die.

Big lumpy brown pile of mashed-togetherness.

This is not specific to biology — the same is true of ideas. In both cases, there is a continual process of "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks," and if there's no variety involved in that process, there can be little advancement.

A candy with a blowhole — who'd have thought?

Oddities and curiosities which seem useless now could have undiscovered worth. Quaternions, when first invented, were seen as mere mathematical toys, but now have well-appreciated applications.

One of the greatest powers in existence is the Unknown. Its power is, quite literally, immeasurable. Mutation, diversity — they tap into that power. By casting a wide net into the unknown, we do not know what we might encounter, but the potential is great. If we always fish from the same small, well-understood pond, we limit ourselves.

Even outside of any notion of "progress" or "improvement" diversity is defense against disaster. Putting all of your eggs in one basket is dangerous. We could be talking about the physical world or finance; the lesson is the same.

Diversity is strength, and not just in a namby-pamby politically correct sense — it is truth.
