Some of the mess isn't beautiful. Maybe it's our flaw that we cannot appreciate some of the permutations of existence, but some of it is gross.

A philosophical acknowledgement of some values is one thing, but that melts away quickly when faced with something that invokes a non-intellectual response. Revulsion, anger, wincing at the smell — these short-circuit thoughtful discussion, at least in the moment.

To be disgusted by others is one of our own little uglinesses. Perhaps we revile them for having triggered this unfortunate aspect of ourselves.
